It is clear that microorganisms are the most significant source for the discovery of antibiotics. Almost all currently used antimicrobials are either the microbial NPs themselves or synthetic derivatives, which capitalize on their well-known pharmacophores. Mexico is known for its rich and unique biodiversity and holds 10% of the global species. Thus, over the past years, Dr. Figueroa’s research group has led a collaborative effort to discover new chemistry and potential new antibiotic leads from unexplored natural sources from Mexican biodiversity.
