BRYOMIC
In the context of the project BRYOMIC, we are focusing on the largely unexplored microbiome from bryophytes, particularly from mosses. Mosses are extremely resilient and thrive in almost every ecosystem – and their microbiomes play a key role in their success. Moss-associated bacteria have been shown to produce antibacterial and antifungal compounds; however, the biosynthetic potential of the moss microbiome has so far not been systematically investigated.
Using metabolomics as well as bioinformatic genome mining approaches, we aim to discover natural products in the moss microbiome, elucidate their biosynthetic pathways, and understand the bioactivity of these metabolites as well as their role in microbial interactions.
The project “Antimicrobial natural products from the moss microbiome (BRYOMIC)” is financed by the Free State of Thuringia with funds from the European Social Fund Plus (ESF+).
