Work and family life

In order to operate in the field of science successfully, an open-minded and family-friendly working environment is crucial. The Leibniz-HKI aims at promoting young families and creating working conditions that allow for a reconciliation of work and family life. For the Leibniz-HKI, family in this regard is not limited to married couples but includes all kinds of committed partnerships with or without children and dependents requiring care. For this reason, we engage in the association Jenaer Bündnis für Familie and are the founding member of the Dual Career Network Thuringia.

The equal opportunity officers at the Leibniz-HKI would like to support you. We are happy to provide advisory support to all members of staff, including the following matters:

  • Child care in emergencies
  • Dual career opportunities
  • Establishing schemes for the reconciliation of work and family life
  • Provision of information material

Please don’t hesitate to contact us personally or by email. We also appreciate any suggestions and tips for other relevant issues. Any enquiries and personal data will be treated with utmost care and are strictly confidential.

Equal opportunities and diversity

We abide by the code of conduct on equal opportunity of women and men as well as the reconciliation of work and family life which we understand as the crucial basis for successful research work. We are aware of the fact that the number of women in research is often proportionally low. Consequently, we are aiming at mitigating this situation by enabling both female and male scientists to have equal career opportunities and working conditions.

The Leibniz-HKI is happy about the diversity of its employees, their ethnic backgrounds, their genders, ages and physical constitutions as well as their sexual and their religious and ideological intentions and their life styles. The Leibniz-HKI has therefore signed the Charta der Vielfalt (Charta of diversity management) and has been awarded the Total-E-Quality seal.

  • Discrimination and conflict management at the workplace

International employees

At Leibniz-HKI, scientists from 50 nations are working together – some come to Jena for short term research stays, other as doctoral researchers or scientific co-workers. To make the transition to Germany and Jena as smooth as possible, we offer support even before the arrival at Leibniz-HKI, e.g. regarding visa issues and residence permits. Here in Jena, we assist in finding accommodation and with administrative formalities for foreign scientists as well as accompanying family members. Non-native speakers have access to a wide range of German and English language courses at different levels.

The Leibniz-HKI endorses the European Charter and Code for Researchers.
