Integrated bio process devolopment of new fermentation and downstream purification processes for natural products

For the identification of a novel natural product by mass spectrometry, only 1-2 mg of the target substance are required. However, for subsequent structure determination and for activity testing, amounts of 100 mg up to 10 g are required.

To achieve these amounts, a stringent development of the process from first identification of the isolated substance, to activity screenting, to pilot scale fermentation, to primary processing up to purification of the pure substance is necessary.

Improving the bio process development and optimization will lead to an increase in knowledge and technology transfer from basic research to industry.
