Good Scientific Practice

The basis of trustworthy science is scientific integrity. Therefore, researchers have the responsibility to carry out their activities according to the rules of good scientific practice. To ensure good scientific practice, the Leibniz-HKI has adopted guidelines. They are based on the Codex of the German Research Foundation and follow the Guideline on Safeguarding Good Scientific Practice of the Leibniz Association. The guidelines are intended to help promote the quality of scientific work and prevent scientific misconduct.

The absolute confidentiality of the work of the ombudspersons is an essential prerequisite for advice seakers to approach them without fear of repercussions. All employees, including technical and administrative staff, can contact the Leibniz-HKI ombudspersons if they have indications that good scientific practice at the Leibniz-HKI could be at risk. For example, the ombudspersons are dealing with questions regarding authorship of scientific publications; but they can also be contacted in case of any other conflict in scientific or non-scientific advising.

When the ombudspersons are contacted in case of conflict by an employee, they provide advice or refer to other competent bodies. If conflicting parties are unable to resolve a problem satisfactorily on their own, the ombudsperson invites them to a meeting moderated by the ombudsperson. Usually, a satisfactory solution to the problem can be found, which is recorded in an internal protocol.

In the very rare case that no solution can be found, the Guidelines for Safeguarding Good Scientific Practice at the Leibniz-HKI determine the further steps. Thus, upon request of the ombudsperson, the management of the Leibniz-HKI may appoint an ad hoc commission to review scientific misconduct after consultation with the department and group heads.
