Abstract
Bacterial signaling pathways provide wonderful systems for analyzing protein evolution in vivo. A systematic dissection of the phosphate-sensing machinery in proteobacteria shows that adaptive, not neutral, mutations disable deleterious crosstalk with closely related signaling systems.
