The Centre for Innovation Competence (ZIK) Septomics is a cross-faculty research centre of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena which was established in 2009. It is scientifically and administratively associated with the University Hospital Jena and the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology – Hans Knöll Institute. We conduct sepsis and infection research combining interdisciplinary systems biology basic research with clinical and translational research. Using this approach, we aim to overcome the persistent stagnation in the diagnosis and therapy of sepsis and severe infections by means of improved molecular understanding.

The Septomics centre consists of four research groups, including two junior research groups funded by the funding programme “Centres for Innovation Competence” by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF).

  • Fungal Septomics (1st ZIK funding period 2009-2014, today: research group at HKI)
  • Host Septomics (1st ZIK funding period 2011-2016, today: research group at University Hospital Jena)
  • Host Fungal Interfaces (2nd ZIK funding period 2016-2021)
  • Translational Septomics (2nd ZIK funding period 2016-2021)
